Essential ISBN and Book Publishing Tools for Self-Publishing Authors
Discover powerful tools built specifically for self-publishing authors. From ISBN validation and barcode generation to flipbook creation and marketing tools - everything you need to successfully publish and promote your book in one comprehensive guide.
We have been helping writers self-publish and market their books since 2019. Based on our years of experience, we understand authors face many challenges when self-publishing a book. One of the confusing processes in self-publishing a book is securing copyright ownership and obtaining an ISBN. This is why we started this blog to help authors learn how to obtain an ISBN and understand the self-publishing process in general. Not only that, we have been working tirelessly to build ISBN and book-related tools to help authors or anyone working with books.
In this blog post, I am going to share with you all the tools that we have built, and I will make sure to keep this post up to date with new tools as we publish them.
ISBN and Book Tools
-
ISBN Hyphenator: There are five hyphens in a 13-digit ISBN. Two of the hyphens are fixed, but the other three hyphens have rules, and these rules are set by the International ISBN Agency. The International ISBN Agency publishes these rules as ISBN ranges data. We built the ISBN Hyphenator tool to help publishers or anyone working with books to put hyphens in ISBNs at the right place. We use ISBN ranges data to find the right hyphen positions in the ISBN.
-
ISBN Barcode Generator: Working as a freelancer and running a book publishing agency that helps authors self-publish their books at affordable cost, we built this ISBN barcode generator tool because there are no online tools that generate ISBN barcodes with correct hyphens. Not only that, we also have a price barcode generator; however, both are separate, so you will have to use an image editor to put both barcodes together.
-
ISBN Lookup: We built the ultimate ISBN Lookup tool that combines data from multiple sources. Unlike ISBNSearch.org, an ISBN lookup tool that only gets data from Amazon, so it has limited coverage. Another well-known ISBN Lookup tool is ISBNDb.com, which is more business-friendly. We built ISBNLookup.org as consumer-friendly, a tool for book readers, librarians, and book enthusiasts.
-
ISBN Validator: ISBNs are not random numbers; they follow a structure. The first 12 digits in ISBN-13 and the first 9 digits in ISBN-10 are serialized and issued by an ISBN agency. But the last digit is there to validate the first 12 or 9 digits in the ISBN. Using this validation process, an ISBN can be validated. We built this tool to make ISBN validation easier.
-
ISBN Converter: There are two types of ISBN: ISBN-10 and ISBN-13. ISBN-13 is now the modern version of ISBN. ISBN-13 with prefix 978 can be converted to ISBN-10. But ISBN-13 with prefix 979 or any other cannot be converted to ISBN-10.
-
ISBN Check Digit Calculator: The last digit in the ISBN is called the check digit, which validates the previous ISBN digits. Just like the ISBN validator, we built this tool to find check digits from the first 12 digits or 9 digits. Please note it is illegal to generate a new ISBN and use it for publication. You must obtain an ISBN from an ISBN agency in your country.
-
ISBN Generator: This is a random tool that we built for testing and educational purposes. You can generate random valid ISBN-13s in bulk using this tool. Please note it is illegal to use randomly generated ISBNs for actual publication. ISBNs are the property of the book publisher to whom they are issued. Any ISBN that has not been issued to any book publisher by an ISBN agency will be valid mathematically but systematically invalid. In order to validate if an ISBN is systematically valid or not, try using the ISBN Hyphenator tool as it uses official ISBN ranges data.
-
Flipbook Maker: There is a Flipbook maker service offered by the ISBN agency in the US; it’s called Book2look. We created this tool as a good alternative to the Book2look service for authors and book publishers to share their book samples with their audience with an interactive reading experience. You can see the sample page here, and read full guide.
-
Bookview PDF Reader: Bookview is another flipbook maker tool that uses PDF files to create an interactive reading experience flipbook. You just need to upload a PDF file to your web server and enter the direct PDF file URL to create a flipbook. Read full guide on how to use it.
